The first long-distance train ran under European Train Control System (ETCS) signalling between Hitchin and Welwyn Garden City in late August, marking the latest stage in the East Coast Digital Programme.

A Grand Central Class 180 DMU was used to test its Alstom onboard equipment and compatibility with Siemens Mobility’s lineside kit at speeds of up to 125mph. Network Rail says the testing went well and paves the way for trains to run on the southern section of the East Coast main line under ETCS from late 2025.

NR ECDP Head of Access and Integration Ricky Barsby said: ‘We had to do important testing to check the new system is working well with trains operating at high speed. This vital work is bringing us a step closer to a more punctual, reliable and greener East Coast main line.’
