HS2 to kick off Sheffield wiring

HS2 LTD is to begin preparatory works for electrification of the Midland main line between Clay Cross and Sheffield. The move follows the decision to route HS2 trains into Sheffield city centre via the MML, rather than serving a parkway station at Meadowhall as originally planned. Trains will leave the high-speed line via a spur and join the MML for 25km through Chesterfield to the current Sheffield station, requiring this stretch to be electrified. High-speed trains are due to begin operating on the eastern leg, part of Phase 2b, in 2033. HS2 Ltd says the works will involve a series of land surveys to inform the work programme, with a public consultation on the works required for electrification to be undertaken prior to a hybrid bill being brought to Parliament.
