Scottish fares trial dropped

The Scottish Government is to curtail ScotRail’s abolition of Peak fares after analysis revealed that passenger numbers increased by 6.8% - short of the 10% rise needed to cover it costs.

Analysis also found that it did not achieve its aim of encouraging a significant modal shift from car to rail and that subsidy cost around £40 million.

Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop said that although the trial would have been welcomed by passengers who saved money, ‘this level of subsidy cannot continue in the current financial climate on that measure alone.’

A 12-month discount on all ScotRail season tickets will be introduced while flexipasses will allow 12 single journeys for the price of 10. Super Off-Peak tickets will also be reintroduced.
