c2c Head of Control and Golden Whistle award winner TOMMY PUNCHEON talks to PHILIP SHERRATT about his work to drive up performance for the operator

C2c has long been one of the best performing operators on the network. But it has had something of a turbulent time in the last few years, particularly since the introduction of a new timetable in December 2015. This led to a dip in performance, but since then the operator has recovered, returning to the top of the table last year and picking up a Golden Whistle award at our January ceremony.
The same awards event saw c2c’s Tommy Puncheon take away a Highly Commended certificate for Outstanding Operations. Nominated by his colleagues, Tommy’s citation described him as ‘an absolute revelation and a standout star at c2c’, noting he has ‘genuinely made a real difference at a high-performing operator, which speaks volumes for his personal abilities and impact’.
Tommy explains the early months after the new timetable was introduced were challenging for the operator. There were a number of speed restrictions on the network and while the operator had a good team in place, morale within the Service Delivery Centre (SDC) at Upminster was low.
